Moonchild - story outline
Opening
In the year 2014, the economy of Japan has collapsed, causing mass immigration
to other countries. Mallepa (a fictional city located in Asia) is mainly inhabited
by Asians, and the majority of its population is Taiwanese and Chinese. The
rapid increase of immigrants has caused the security and political situation
in Mallepa to worsen. Violence and gunfights are common, with the different
groups desperately fighting for survival. It is in the streets of Mallepa
that our two main characters meet.
Meeting Kei
The film starts with three young boys attempting to rob someone. Sho and his
brother, Shinji, are orphans, as is their childhood friend, Toshi and they
survive in Mallepa by stealing from the local thugs. They find a target, and
after successfully stealing a suitcase from him, the three scamper off in
different directions. On his way back to their hideout, Sho enters a dilapidated
building. He notices a man sitting on the floor, and thinking that he was
asleep, tries to steal his watch. This man is Kei, who turns out to be a vampire.
Kei slaps his hands away and Sho withdraws quickly. It looks as if Kei is
desperately in need of blood and he continues to stare at Sho menacingly.
I have no doubt that he would have made a nice meal out of Sho if a shaft
of sunlight didn't happen to shine through the window at that moment, burning
Kei's hands. Kei is too weak to move and his hands slowly started burning.
Though shocked at first, Sho quickly offers his help. Kei refuses, but Sho
ignores him and drags him to their hideout, cleverly pulling a blanket over
Kei's body to shield him from the sun. Even though he sensed that Kei was
different, Sho saved him nonetheless.
Back at their hideout, Toshi and Shinji are busy trying to open the suitcase
while Sho tries to make Kei eat something. The boys finally manage to open
the suitcase by smashing a rock over it and they find plenty of money inside.
As they are rejoicing over their good fortune, Kei notices their robbery victim
coming up on them. Toshi tries to escape with Shinji, but the man pulls out
his gun and shoots Shinji's leg. He then threatens Sho that he will kill Shinji
if Sho doesn't find Toshi right away. As Sho rushes out to try to get Toshi
back, he hears a blood-chilling scream. Sho runs back to their hideout and
sees Shinji wobbling out. Shinji asks him to run away but Sho ignores his
warnings and enters the building.
What he saw was Kei feeding on the man and drinking his blood. Even after
discovering Kei's true identity - that he is a vampire - Sho is not afraid
of him, and is instead, strangely attracted to this mysterious being. He walks
closer to Kei and simply smiles when Kei asks him if he isn't frightened by
what he is seeing. Perhaps he saw in Kei a way to make himself stronger, or
perhaps he was simply fascinated by Kei. Whatever it was, the two become fast
friends immediately. Sho's live improved greatly upon meeting Kei, as Kei
teaches Sho how to fight and become stronger.
All grown up
The story fast-forwards to 9 years later as we see a grown-up Sho, and Kei
joining him in their stealing and robbing. Sho has grown up to be a cheeky
and daring young man, and his stunts are more outrageous than ever. Sho does
most of the action, with Kei shouting instructions at him and aiding him every
now and then. After they finish off the remaining mafia, Sho rummages through
their stuff while Kei drinks the blood of one of the (probably already dead)
mafia. Sho expresses displeasure at the pizza left on the table.
They go back to the South Ward and meet up with Toshi. Toshi distributes
the money he collected from their (dead) robbery victims, which isn't much.
Sho and Kei jokingly accuse him of secretly pocketing part of their money.
Toshi informs them of their next target, but Sho complains that the drug Toshi
added to the pizza wasn't strong enough and that caused them great trouble
when they went in. They bicker for a bit, and Sho loses as usual. Toshi then
goes back to his work and Sho asks him to be careful. This shows that despite
the constant arguing, the three are good friends.
The next scene shows Sho and Kei back at their house and putting the money
away in an old box. It seems that the trio had been rather successful in their
scams over the past few years, judging from the amount of money in the box.
Kei is sleeping and dreams of Luka's death scene again. Kei and Luka were
on the beach and they watched as the sun slowly rose. Kei asked Luka to go
but Luka refused, saying that he is ready to leave this world. Kei walked
away, leaving Luka alone. Kei wakes up from his dream and in his mind, he
hears Luka singing as he slowly burns to his death.
Sho walks over and looks at him with concern in his eyes. Sho asks Kei if
he is all right, but Kei waved his concerns away and asks Sho to go out more
often instead of accompanying him all day in the house. Being a vampire, Kei
of course cannot go out during the day, and Sho has been following his lifestyle
much to his dismay. Kei even goes so far as to suggest living apart for a
while. From their conversation, it's apparent that this topic was frequently
argued about by the two friends, with Sho insisting that things are fine the
way they are. Kei expresses his worry that he might turn on his friends some
day, but Sho dismisses his worries and the argument ended (for the time being).
Sho and Shinji estranged
In the next chapter, Sho goes out to visit Shinji, who is now running a fish
shop. On his way there, Sho realized that he was being followed by two men,
but he shakes them off easily and makes his way to his brother's shop. After
bickering for a bit with Jessie, a girl who is helping Shinji run his shop,
he goes off to find Shinji on the rooftop, where he sees Shinji smoking from
a water pipe. The drug seems to have taken effect already as Shinji did not
even greet Sho and simply ignored him. Sho expressed his displeasure at his
brother. Shinji walks away and sees a hallucination where a big fish is swimming
around and over his head. Back at the shop, two Cantonese men are waiting
for Shinji and they ask him for payment. They start bullying him when Shinji
cannot fork out the money. Sho steps in and helps Shinji settle the payment.
Sho rushes forward to help Shinji up as soon as the two men left, but Shinji
pushes his hand away and refuses his help.
Kei meets Yi-che
It's now night time and we see Kei strolling in a park by himself. He encounters
a girl painting a mural in the park and seems drawn by her drawing. He stood
there watching the painting for some time before the girl realizes he is there.
They stare at each other silently, and then Kei smiles at her and walks off
slowly, still looking at the painting the whole time. When he has passed the
mural, the girl turns around and looks at Kei.
Meeting Son
We jump to a scene in the mafia headquarter. Toshi stands nervously in the
middle of the office, holding a few boxes of pizza. The mafia leader looks
at him and the pizza suspiciously, and Toshi tells him that the pizzas were
a treat from their boss. The mafia leader believes him and Toshi passes the
boxes of pizza around the room. Downstairs, one of the guards is sitting on
a chair by himself, eating pizza and complaining about his job. He suddenly
drops over as the drug in the pizza takes effect. Sho and Kei walk into the
room and are very pleased with Toshi. Suddenly, a man staggers into the room
and falls over, dead. The sounds of gunshot follow soon after.
Bewildered, the two men quickly walk inside to find out who has interrupted
them and blown their cover. They meet Son and both sides have guns pointed
at the other. They start withdrawing from each other slowly, and the mafia
rushes in and surrounds the three of them. Kei starts shooting at the mafia
and taking their cues from him, Sho and Son start firing at the mafia as well.
Once they have taken care of the mafia, they quickly point the gun towards
each other again. This is the scene where Sho tosses Kei the gun without looking
at him. The three eye each other and after a short conversation, they decide
to join forces for the time being.
Joining forces
This is followed with one of the major action scenes in the movie. Back in
the office, Toshi is holding out on his own against the mafia. Just as he
runs out of bullets, Son steps into the office and starts firing at the mafia.
Sho is also tackling a few mafia on his own in another part of the building.
He knocks the gun out of a man's hand, climbs on top of him and flips backward
with his legs crossed around the man's neck. Using the man as a sort of pivoting
point, he turns round and round, firing shots all the while. He then jumps
down and attempts a sideward flipping kick but misses and hits the ground
instead. Other mafias are trying to hit Kei, but he grabs one of the fallen
man and uses him like a puppet to take down the other mafia.
The movie doesn't fail to provide the audience with comic relief though,
as halfway through the intense gunfight, Toshi receives a phone call and attempts
to take a pizza delivery order. In the meantime, Sho continues to struggle
with the mafia. They are now down to fighting with swords. Sho manages to
duck and avoid the slashings and then scrambles over to Kei who is calmly
smoking against a pillar. Kei passes him the cigarette and warns Sho that
the man is coming again. Sho ducks in time and the fighting continues. One
of the mafia approaches Kei, who is already smoking another cigarette, and
points a gun at him. Kei throws his cigarette and falls backwards. The man
takes aim at Kei's head and fires continuously, but Kei moves his head at
an extremely fast speed and the man misses all his shots. Kei kicks him high
into the air once the man runs out of bullets. He then pulls out another cigarette,
but is annoyed to find out that his lighter is not working.
We move back to the office again, where Toshi is still trying to take down
the order. Sho has now joined the gunfight as well. He walks to the middle
of the room and fires continuously at the mafia in the other corner of the
room. Sho soon runs out of bullets, and Kei who just entered the room, calls
out his name. As if by instinct, Sho turns around and manages to catch the
cartridge that Kei threw at him. He continues firing as Kei praises him. Realizing
that their side is losing badly, the mafia leader grabs the bag full of money
and attempts to escape. Son immediately runs after him.
However, the mafia leader hides himself behind a row of motorcycles and
fires at Son from behind. He manages to hit Son's leg and Son fires back at
him too, but Son runs out of bullets after one shot. Son is now completely
at the mercy of the mafia leader. The leader walks over to him and asks him
who he is. He answers, "Son Tin-Chen, brother of Son Yi-che." Son
then reveals that he attacked the mafia tonight as revenge for having raped
his sister. Son then reveals that he attacked the mafia tonight as revenge
for having raped his sister. But the leader merely sneeres at him and points
his gun towards Son.
Fortunately, Sho steps in at the nick of time and fires at the mafia leader's
leg.
In one swift motion, Son reaches out and grabs the leader's gun and points
it at him. The leader begs him not to shoot. Son hesitates for a few seconds
and then, shaking and screaming in anger, takes aim and fires at him. Sho
watches silently in the corner.
Son's house
The four young men are now back at Son's house. The girl who Kei met in the
park turns out to be Son's sister. She treats Son's wounds as the other men
watch and make fun of him. Son then wobbles out and asks Sho to let Yi-che
look at his wounds. Sho walks over, a little unwillingly, and rolls up his
sleeve where the blood has started to dry. Slightly affected by the sight
of blood, Kei jumps up and walks out of the room. Kei and Yi-che share a look
and then Kei turns around and continues walking. The other two men sit down
at the corridor as Sho gets his wound treated. Sho appears mesmerized by Yi-che
and cannot stop himself from staring at her. Yi-che suddenly looks up and
Sho quickly averts his eyes.
The three men go upstairs to the rooftop to find Kei once Yi-che has finished
treating Sho. They exclaim over the incredibly huge pink-ish moon hanging
over the horizon. Son explains how Yi-che suddenly stopped talking when she
was young. Sho and Kei immediately turn their heads to look at Son. Son then
warns (Sho) not to fall in love with his sister. Sho panics for a moment but
Son and Toshi immediately break into laughter and make fun of Sho.
Spending time together
Time seems to fly past after Sho, Kei and Toshi meet Yi-che and Son. They
go driving at night with Sho behind the wheel driving recklessly. They arrive
at the beach and Toshi suggests taking a photo. Yi-che is still standing near
the car and Kei catches her smiling as she listens to their conversation.
When she realizes that Kei is watching her, Yi-che immediately stops smiling.
Toshi runs off to the front of the car to set up the camera and they make
fun of his old camera. As they pose in front of the camera, Son suggests coming
to the beach at daytime. Sho and Toshi look at each other and remain silent,
and Kei answers instead and agrees to come to the beach during the day next
time. Everyone is smiling at the camera, except for Yi-che. Kei leans towards
her and tells her that it is okay to smile when you are feeling happy. She
follows his advice and smiles shyly at the camera.
Next we see Sho sauntering down an alley, swinging a bouquet of flowers
in his hands. He walks past a man who is swearing loudly in Mandarin. Sho
continues down the alley and comes to a sudden halt as he turns around the
corner. In front of him, in Son's house are Toshi, Son, and Yi-che eating
lunch. He tries to walk back silently and quietly, but the chicken started
making noises again and Son looks over to where Sho is standing. Sho quickly
hides the flowers behind him. Son invites him inside and he looks nervously
at Yi-che. She notices and makes a move as if to offer him her chair. He greets
her softly and drops the flowers on the road before going in. Sho, Kei, and
Son continue eating their lunch when Sho suddenly chokes on his food. He takes
a drink just as Yi-che returns to the table with the flowers Sho dropped on
the road. Flustered, Sho splutters water all over the table. Yi-che carries
the flower over to the table and Toshi exclaims that it is beautiful. Sho
keeps staring at Yi-che with his mouth open and agrees that (Yi-che) is very
beautiful. This follows with more scenes of the group hanging out and fooling
around on the beach; and talking and laughing in Son's house.
Yi-che's ceremony
The five of them are back at the park, watching Yi-che put the finishing touches
on her mural. Son invites them to the ceremony on the following day where
it will be officially unveiled. Son then asks whether Kei will be able to
make it tomorrow and comments that he is looking pale. Kei promises that he
will try his best to come the next day and smiles reassuringly at Yi-che.
Yi-che smiles back in return.
The following day, Kei asks anxiously about the weather. Sho reports that
it is bright and sunny and Kei smiles disappointedly, saying that it is fitting
weather for her big day. Sho expresses his concern about Kei's refusal to
drink blood recently, which results in Kei getting weaker and weaker. Kei
then reveals his feelings about himself as a vampire, and having to feed off
others in order to survive. His disgust over himself and what he has to do
makes him go on "starvation diets" at times. Even though Kei enjoys
spending time with them now, he knows that it is not something that will last.
As Sho sits there listening silently to Kei, tears start rolling down from
his eyes. Kei manages to control his anger and frustration and walks over
to wipe away his tears. Kei reaches over and holds him for a few seconds,
then urges Sho to go to the ceremony.
Toshi's death
Toshi is getting the pizza ready for them in his pizza shop, when he receives
a phone call that makes him really excited and happy. At the same time, we
see the two men who were following Sho earlier on appear at the shop. They
stab Toshi suddenly. Meanwhile, Sho and Son are attending Yi-che's ceremony.
The weather has suddenly turned bad and it has started to rain. Sho, Son
and Yi-che are standing under the tree waiting for Toshi and Kei to come,
when Son notices the two men who just attacked Toshi, walking over to them.
They pull a gun from their coat and start firing at Sho, Son and Yi-che. The
three run for cover amongst the trees. Toshi suddenly leaps forward in front
of the two men and tries to stop them from shooting, but one of them shoots
him in the stomach. Sho tries to run forward to help Toshi but Son pulls him
back. It seems like the two men were sent by the mafia group who they have
been stealing from. One of the men then turns to Toshi and points the gun
at him, but Kei appears out of nowhere and kicks him away. Still weak from
the lack of blood, Kei falls over to the ground. The other man points the
gun at Kei, but Toshi rushes forward and stands between Kei and the men, trying
to shield Kei. The man calmly shoots Toshi and he keels over.
Kei manages to stand up again and suddenly jumps (or flies) behind the other
man who had fallen, which causes him to shoot his own friend by mistake. Kei
then runs off to the forest and the man chases after him. Sho, Son, Yi-che
run forward to Toshi's side, while the park is filled with sounds of gunshots.
Leaving Toshi to the other two, Son runs off after Kei into the forest. Sho
holds him close and calls out Toshi's name repeatedly. Toshi tells Sho that
he just received a phone call from the orphanage, informing him that his mother
is looking for him; that Toshi is supposed to meet her in that park the following
day. Toshi then passes away.
Sho keeps calling his name over and over again, and he holds Toshi close
while Yi-che kneels beside them, crying silently. A few minutes later, Sho
looks up and sees Son standing at the edge of the forest. Sho gets up and
goes over to where Son is staring at Kei in the forest. Yi-che joins the two
of them and is shocked to see Kei drinking the blood of the man. Son and Yi-che
continue looking at Kei with a mixture of fear and shock while Sho tells Kei
that Toshi is dead and asks him over and over again to stop. But Kei only
continues drinking the man's blood, ignoring Sho and the other two completely.
Struggling alone in Mallepa
The movie fast forwards again to a few years later. What Kei did and where
he went during those years were unknown. All that we know is that Kei left
Mallepa. Left alone, Sho struggled to survive in Mallepa and eventually became
one of the mafia leaders. The scene opens in the park, where he is playing
with his daughter, Hana. He lifts her high up in the air and we see a shot
of his back strapped with guns. He then puts her down when his bodyguard tells
him that it's time to go. Yi-che walks over to them and helps him put on his
coat. He then kisses her on the cheek before walking off with his bodyguard.
We can tell that these two have married since then.
Sho speaks with a deep, mature voice and has a sophisticated look about
him. Sho comments on the changes that have taken place in Mallepa to Shinji
who is sitting in the car with him. The two brothers seem to be getting along
better than before. They reach a bar, where they meet the Taiwanese mafia
leader, along with four of his subordinates. We see Son sitting beside the
Taiwanese mafia leader, Mr. Chan, and seems bent on ignoring Sho even when
Sho greets him. Sho pulls a cigarette out and then makes a sudden move as
if he is about to attack them, when he is in fact just getting his cigarette
lit. This also serves as a warning to the mafia leaders that he didn't come
unprepared. Mr. Chan then tries to strike a deal with Sho, asking him to join
the Taiwanese group. Sho refuses, saying that his buddy was killed by their
people and that he will never join them.
Sho's new group
Sho and Shinji enter a shop, which turns out to be Shinji's new bar. Jessie
comes out and greets them. She, too, seems to have profited from Sho's rise
in power. Sho walks into the bar where a group of men are fooling around.
This is Sho's gang, which is made up of mainly immigrants and foreigners.
Even though he jokes around with his gang members as well, he seems more reserved
and it is obvious that it's a boss-subordinate relationship as opposed to
the friendships he shared with Toshi and Kei. In the bar, Shinji and Jessie
are calculating their earnings and Shinji scolds her lightly for getting the
numbers wrong again. Shinji puts the money in the same green box which they
had used when they were still young boys and which was passed to Sho when
he grew up. Sho sits alone in a corner and smiles slightly as he watches the
people around him.
Reunion with Kei
The scene then jumps to a place somewhere far from Mallepa, which seems to
be under siege. We see a detective and a doctor walking into a prison cell
and inside the cell is Kei tied to a chair. The doctor starts explaining Kei's
situation to the detective, whose name is Lolli, and Lolli starts asking Kei
questions in English, Cantonese, and Chinese. Kei suddenly replied in Japanese
and requested a death sentence. He even told them how he can be killed, by
placing him under direct sunlight. However, Lolli decides to reserve judgment
and persists in seeking the truth instead of giving him a death sentence straightaway.
Back in Mallepa, Sho and his gang members break into a jewelery store. At
that exact moment, four of the Taiwanese mafia are playing mahjong in a private
room in the jewelery store. Unfortunately for the mafia, one of them runs
out of money and heads back into the store to get more cash. The mafia bumps
into Sho and his gang members and all four of them are killed. That night,
when Sho is at home with Yi-che and Hana, he sees a news report about Kei
on television.
Sho visits Kei in his cell. His voice is back to the slightly softer and
younger voice we know from his days with Toshi and Kei. Sho keeps talking
and trying to get him to join the conversation but Kei remains silent, staring
blankly to the side. Sho then takes out a picture of Hana and he explains
about some of the things that happened after Kei left Mallepa, such as his
marriage to Yi-che and the birth of his daughter. When Kei remains unresponsive,
Sho leans forward and puts the picture against the glass wall. He begs Kei
to take a look at Hana and confesses that he has always hoped to show him
his daughter. At that, Kei finally looks up and stares for a long time at
the photo before asking Sho about the rest. Kei then asks him about Son when
Sho did not mention anything about him. He tells Kei that Son has joined the
Taiwanese mafia but assured Kei that he will keep trying to work things out
between the two of them. Kei admits that he is glad to see Sho still alive
and doing well. Sho smiles at him.
Murder of Sho's newfound group
Lolli who has been watching some of the talk between the two of them, asked
Sho for details about Kei's life. Sho admits that he doesn't know much about
Kei's past either. But Lolli says to Sho that he was the only one Kei talks
to, and expresses his desire to find out the truth, and perhaps help Kei.
Nevertheless, Sho walks off without telling him anything much. Sho makes a
phone call to Mallepa, requesting the best lawyers available. At this exact
same time in Mallepa, his gang members are brutally gunned down in the middle
of the street by two young men.
Shinji's death
Sho and Shinji are the only ones left. Shinji blames Sho for not being there
when it happened, and for running off to help Kei instead. He shows his displeasure
and his disgust towards Kei and calls him a "monster". Filled with
anger himself, Sho starts accusing Shinji of being useless and reminds him
that it was because of him that Shinji has this new bar, and got off drugs.
Shinji jumps up in anger and punches Sho. Sho calmly gets up before returning
his punch. He then grabs Shinji by the collar and pushes him to the floor.
He shouts at Shinji to do something on his own for once instead of depending
on him all the time. Jessie, who was listening to their argument, simply watches
the fight silently from a corner of the room. When Sho leaves, Shinji starts
doing drugs again. Jessie steals all the money in the green box where Shinji
keeps his savings and walk out of the bar. Shinji sees an illusion of the
big fish swimming in front of his eyes again.
Still appearing to feel the effects of the drug, Shinji finds the Taiwanese
mafia leader and points a gun at him. But he is holding a young baby at that
moment and Shinji did not shoot him. Other young children playing on the streets
notice Shinji and his guns and run away from him, thus alerting Mr. Chan's
bodyguards. They shoot him and he dies on the spot. Son, who was standing
beside Mr. Chan, recognizes him and looks at the scene with an expression
close to guilt.
All alone
It is also Son who is waiting beside Shinji's body in the mortuary. Sho and
Yi-che walks over to where Shinji's body is, and Sho is extremely shaken by
his brother's death. He pulls his gun out and fires at Son in anger, but Yi-che
grabs his hands in time and he misses. Sho starts shouting at Son and Son
also pulls out his gun while explaining angrily that it was Shinji who started
it. Sho shakes off Yi-che's hands and the two point a gun at each other's
chest. Sho then threatens to kill Son and his entire family and friends. Suddenly,
Yi-che speaks up. The two turn around and look at her in surprise. She begs
them not to fight and asks them why they must be fighting each other now.
Sho looks up, breathing deeply, and appears as if he is trying to control
his emotions. In the next second, he reaches forward to hold her in his arms
and he cries on her shoulder.
The scene jumps to the park again, where Hana is blowing bubbles and playing
alone while Yi-che sits on a bench and stares at her mural quietly.
A few months later, Yi-che is hospitalized and Son visits her in the hospital.
Yi-che speaks normally and greets Son as her father and asks Hana to greet
her "grandfather" too. After that she turns around and calls Sho
"Kei". Son looks up and sees Sho staring down silently. They walk
up to the roof and Son asks about her condition. Sho tells him that she has
a brain tumour and that she doesn't have much time left. Son apologizes, saying
that he is sorry for not knowing earlier, but Sho only says that he has abandoned
his family and friends for an easier path. Son replies that the reason he
joined Mr.Chan is because he wants to make a better place and he believes
that Mr.Chan can do it. Son answers that they each have chosen their respective
paths to walk. Sho then says that it will be better if either one of them
were to disappear. Son smiles and predicts that the next time they meet will
be at gun point.
Far away from Mallepa, Kei is getting ready for his death sentence. Even
towards the end, Lolli still hopes to know the truth and he hopes that they
might meet again in the future when they are reborn onto this earth. As he
is being moved, Kei receives a phone call from Sho. On the phone, Sho begs
him to return and tells him that he still needs him. Kei remains silent for
a few minutes and Lolli takes the phone from him and tells Sho that Kei will
be put on death row the next day. Kei walks away from the phone looking uncertain
and worried. Sho drops the phone and stands dejectedly in his empty and silent
house.
Kei returns
In the car, as Kei is being transported out, Lolli hears gunshots from behind
and finds his guard dead. He looks around and sees Kei running away with a
blanket wrapped around his body. Lolli takes aim and gets ready to shoot,
but at that moment Kei turns around and looks at him in the eye. They share
a look and Lolli hesitates. With an expression of determination, Kei turns
around and continues running and Lolli fires.
Back in Mallepa, Sho is walking back to where Hana is standing in the park
after purchasing a cotton candy for her. He stops halfway, surprised to see
Kei standing in front of Hana, watching her. Sho takes Kei to the hospital
and whispers to Yi-che that Kei is here. He asks Kei to hold her hand and
Kei approaches her bed slowly. Kei reaches out and holds her fingers gently.
Yi-che reacts slightly to his touch.
When they have returned from the hospital, Sho tells Kei that he wants Yi-che
to be turned into a vampire. Kei refuses, saying that he hates and curses
his own self for having to feed on others to survive and says that he cannot
do the same to Yi-che. Sho insists that he doesn't care as long as Yi-che
is alive, but Kei tells Sho that he cannot let her turn into a monster like
him. Sho looks at him in frustration and suddenly reaches out to open the
curtain. Kei withdraws quickly, but soon realizes that it is raining. Kei
starts singing the lines from "Orenji no Taiyou", the song that
Luka used to sing, as Sho watches from a corner. Sho reveals his plan of taking
revenge on Mr. Chan and asks Kei to accompany him. He passes Kei a gun and
Kei accepts it.
The last fight
The scene changes to an old dilapidated building, where Mr. Chan and his gang
members are reviewing a plan to rebuild that plot of land. As Sho and Kei
walk down the corridor to where Mr. Chan is, Sho asks Kei to reconsider his
suggestion (of turning Yi-che into a vampire) if he dies today. If both Yi-che
and Sho pass away, Hana will be left an orphan and he doesn't want that to
happen, so he asks him to take care of Yi-che. Kei replies vaguely.
They walk into the building and are surrounded by the mafia. Sho refuses
to take cover and keeps advancing recklessly. Mr. Chan reminds Son of what
he needs to do in order to fulfill his dream and Son walks away determined.
Sho continues the gunfight with the mafia while Kei tries to persuade him
without much success to be more careful. Mr. Chan is now left alone with the
two young men who killed Sho's gang members, but they suddenly turn around
and fire at him, claiming that they are now free. Son finds Sho just as he
has taken down the last mafia. By now, Sho is already covered with wounds
and injuries. Son approaches him cautiously and asks for a one-to-one duel
and Sho agrees. Son suddenly notices Kei, but Sho raises his gun to the air
and starts firing at the roof, letting streams of sunlight into the building.
Kei is now trapped in a corner, surrounded by sunlight streaming down from
the roof of the building. Sho stands silently amidst the sunlight and then
walks off with Son.
Sho and Son start fighting each other in a huge room with two rows of pillars.
Kei is looking up at the sky when he notices two young men. The two men pull
out their guns and fire successively at him. Kei slides down to the floor,
bleeding profusely. Meanwhile, Sho and Son continue their duel. As the two
men walk away, Kei stirs. One of the men walks over to check and Kei shoots
him. He gets up suddenly and dashes forward. He kills the other man when he
tries to stop Kei from leaving.
Sho and Son are now preparing for their last shot and they stand facing
each other. Both are down to their last bullet. They laugh at the irony of
their fates before becoming serious again. On the count of three, the sounds
of gunshot ring in the air... and Sho collapses. Son stares at him in shock.
He walks over and accuses him of not firing on purpose, but Sho denies. Kei
walks in and sees Son standing over Sho who is barely alive. Son tells him
that this is their fate and raises his gun towards Kei. Kei fires at him and
Son falls over, dead. Kei sees flashbacks of the time the five of them spent
together. Then the scene switches to Sho lying on the ground bleeding, before
the flashback continues to Sho and Kei's first meeting. Kei walks over to
Sho and tries to stop his bleeding. Sho says that everybody has gone and then
asks Kei to remember the promise. Kei shouts his name and asks Sho not to
leave him.
In 2045
The next scene is in 2045 and we see a young woman putting on the finishing
touch to a mural, titled "Hope" in the park. The design of the drawing
is almost similar to the old one done by Yi-che. She receives a bouquet of
flowers to the applauses of the gathering crowd. Then it quickly changes to
night time and the woman is standing alone. She turns around and sees Kei
sitting on a bench. She thanks him, and we find out that this is Hana, daughter
of Sho and Yi-che. She then walks a few steps and looks around. When Kei asks
her what she is worrying about, she replies that she feels as if someone is
watching her from the dark. Kei apologizes for not being able to send her
off on her flight tomorrow and asks her to study hard and paint great pictures.
They bid farewell and Hana thanks him for one last time before walking off.
Once Hana has left, Kei turns and walks towards the mural, where Sho is standing.
Sho praises her talent and the painting. From the conversation, we can tell
that Sho had not been in Mallepa all this while and Hana was left to Kei's
care. Sho tells Kei he is no longer angry at him, but he just couldn't accept
what he had become and didn't want Hana to see him like that. Kei asks him
whether he would have turned Yi-che into a vampire if they had made it that
time. Sho answers that he doesn't know what he would have done, but that he
is glad they didn't do it. Kei then asks him if he wants to go to the beach.
Kei and Sho pass away
On their way to the beach, Sho starts singing the song "Orenji no Taiyou".
When they reach the beach, Kei passes him the photo of the five of them together
on the beach. They sit side by side in the car and watch silently as the sun
rises. When the sun has risen, all that is left is the white car parked on
the green grass.
Then we see Yi-che, Kei, Sho, and Son squatting on the beach during day
time and Toshi's voice asking them to get ready. Toshi runs over to join them
and the five of them pose for the camera. At first it looks just like the
picture they had taken on the beach many years ago, but suddenly, they smile
and raise their three fingers in a kind of salute.
