timeline of MOON

In various interviews during the time of the release of DIABOLOS, Gackt finally shed some light on the timeline of MOON. Up until then, we did not have a good idea of where each piece of the MOON project/saga/story fell chronologically. Using the western calendar, Gackt clearly divided the timeline into four chapters: Chapter 1 - 700 to 1300; Chapter 2 - 1300 to 1600; Chapter 3 - 1600 to current (2000); and Chapter 4 - current (2000) to the near future.

Chapter 1: 700 to 1300

The DARTS are born during this time period (See section "Residents of MOON" for details on the DARTS). Gackt has not yet created any works that directly cover this time, but he has given us some hints about the setting: Heian era Japan (the Heian period ran from 794 to 1185). The first hint was during the Sixth Day/Seventh Night tour. The concert opened with a song called "Utakata no Yume". Gackt and the members were dressed in kimonos and they are playing the shamisen. Gackt explains in the Gift tourbook interview that the story within the song Utakata no Yume is the story of the DARTS, a clan who was originally from Japan. He also explains that the costumes they wear reflect the background of the mid-Heian period.

The next hint he gave us about the setting for this time period appears in the DIABOLOS CD booklet. Gackt confirmed that the pictures that accompany "Farewell" and "Noesis" are set in Japan during the mid-Heian to early Kamakura periods (the Kamakura period ran from 1185 to 1333), and that the artwork serves as a preview of the first chapter of MOON. He also said that the story told by "Farewell", in particular, is from the first chapter. He comments that the picture illustrates how the person is foreseeing the future.

Chapter 2: 1300 to 1600

During this time period, the world was at war and the DARTS fell into "the darkness". This happened in the beginning of the 1500s. (It is worth noting that in Japan, the middle 15th century to the early 17th century is referred to as the Warring States period (sengoku jidai). It was a time of social, political and military upheaval, and was marked by constant warfare.)

We learn through DIABOLOS that the DARTS created the Shito at the very end of this time period (between 1500 and 1600), and that they were created for the purpose of fighting (See section "Residents of MOON" for details on the Shito). The Shito, however, were weak and powerless. After undergoing an awakening, the Shito gain incredible powers, but they are burdened with an imperfection: the inability to stand under the sunlight. This time period, which tells the origin story of vampires, is covered by the DIABOLOS album and tour.

Chapter 3: 1600 to current (2000)

Gackt has said that Chapter 3 begins with showing how the awakened vampires live "as vampires". The DIABOLOS tour only focuses on the story of five of the 11 remaining Shito, with one survivor at the end. However, it can be inferred that the other 6 Shito may have lived their lives as vampires during this time. Luka, being a vampire, could either be a Shito himself or one that was created by a Shito. He and Kei lived as vampires during this time period.

Gackt also said that the second and third chapters are covered in the album that was being recorded simultaneously with DIABOLOS. Although he hasn’t released an album after DIABOLOS as of this writing, he has released two singles, Redemption and Returner~闇の終焉~. Redemption was performed during the DIABOLOS tour, during the portion of the concert that expressed the Shito’s battle against the DARTS. Returner is also a song about battles, and therefore may fit in with the Shito’s fight with the DARTS. However, with its connection to the Taiga drama Fuurin Kazan, it might take place closer to the second chapter, during the sengoku jidai. We will likely see how Returner actually fits into the MOON story when the next album comes out.

Chapter 4: current (2000) to near future (2045)

This time period begins with the collapse of Japan's economy and mass immigration westward. The characters in the movie MOON CHILD are born and live during this time period. Their story is told through numerous works: MOON album; Kagen no Tsuki tour; MOON CHILD; Jougen no Tsuki tour; MOON CHILD requiem; and Crescent album.

The events in MOON CHILD start on December 31, 2000, in Tokyo. It's the eve of the 21st century, and Luka has decided to end his life, leaving Kei behind. In 2014, Kei first meets Sho, Toshi and Shinji in the southern district of Mallepa. The movie then jumps to 2025, where much of the story takes place. They meet Son and Yi-Che, Toshi is killed and Kei disappears. Nine years later, in 2034, Sho is married to Yi-Che and they have a six year old daughter, Hana. Shinji is killed at that time, and a few months later Yi-Che is hospitalized for a terminal brain tumor. Sho is turned into a vampire by Kei and leaves Mallepa, Yi-Che dies, and Kei watches over Hana. The movie ends in the year 2045, when Hana leaves Mallepa for school, and Kei and Sho disappear with the sunrise.
