Introduction

Welcome to Eien no Yume! This site is dedicated to the artist Gackt Camui. For those of you have been fans for years, you know there is a lot to this man. For those of you who stumbled onto this site by accident (lucky you!!), or who are just getting to know Gackt, here is a little introduction. You old-timers may as well read this too, for nostalgia’s sake. ;)

Gackt Camui was born on July 4 (year as yet unconfirmed, but rumored to be somewhere between 1540 and 1973 XD) on an island of Japan called Okinawa. Not much is known about his childhood, other than what we have read in his autobiography Jihaku. He grew up in Okinawa, where he was exposed to the many cultures that lived on, worked on and visited the island. He moved to Kyoto, which was his home until he decided to move out to Tokyo to pursue his dreams.

Music was a part of his life from an early age, and he learned to play many instruments including piano, drums, guitar, and trumpet. His first band was called Cains:Feel, and his second band was the popular visual kei group, Malice Mizer, for which he was the vocalist. In 1999, he left Malice Mizer and went solo (he is now celebrating his ten years of being a solo artist). His long-time friend You joined him as one of the members of his backing band, GacktJOB. He was also joined early on by Chachamaru, who plays guitar, sings backup vocals and acts as music producer. Over the years, members would come and go, but You and Chacha have been with him the longest.

Gackt’s main activity has been in producing, creating, and performing music. He has released nine albums, twenty-seven singles, and several concert DVDs and VHS tapes. His concerts are on a grand scale, with extravagant costume changes and intricate storylines woven throughout his performances. Many of his albums, songs and concerts touch on the MOON story, which he has considered his life’s work. He has released his albums outside of Japan in Asia and Europe, and has brought his concerts overseas to Taiwan and Korea. In 2006, Gackt formed a band with Yoshiki, Sugizo and Miyavi called S.K.I.N., and held a concert in the U.S. In addition to making his own music, he has produced music for Chinese artist Ji Min Jia (Jia Jia).

Gackt has expanded into many areas outside of music over the years. He starred in the movie MOON CHILD, which he also wrote. In 2007, he starred as Uesugi Kenshin in the year-long Taiga drama Fuurin Kazan. He recently wrapped up filming for the Hollywood movie, Bunraku, set to release in 2009. He has done a lot of voice acting work for games, anime and movies. On top of that, he has written books, worked as a model, did motion capture for video games, produces his own line of jewelry (DARTS), starred in many commercials, and has been involved in several special projects such as Save Our Dears, SUPERSTARS and Eneru’s Big Adventure. Most recently, his voice has been used as a base for a voice synthesis software called GACKPOID. It’s safe to say that Gackt doesn’t limit himself to doing only a few things in life, and it’s probably also safe to say that he will be doing a lot more in the years to come!

Besides his work, Gackt is well known for his quirky personality, strange habits, and stunning good looks (but of course!). You can best get a taste of all of these things by watching his appearances on various television shows such as Hey!Hey!Hey!, Utaban and Domoto Kyoudai (see the Clips section). Or if you can read Japanese, you can learn a lot about his personality and outlook on life through magazine interviews (or just hop over to our Translations section for a few articles). It would be impossible to summarize all of these things in words, so go experience him for yourself!

One thing that stands out about Gackt (well okay, many things do, but stay with me here) is his desire to unite Asia, and his probable secret wish to unite the entire world. He is a strong believer in communicating with people to learn about them and their culture, and he has taken on learning languages in order to do this. So far he knows English, Chinese, Korean and some French. By bringing his music overseas, he wants to accomplish that dream of uniting Asia and communicating with people all over the world. His website Gackt.com now has sections in English, Chinese and Korean, and he has opened Myspace accounts in those languages as well. Conversely, many of his fans have taken up learning Japanese due to Gackt’s influence.

So this introduction is simply that—an introduction to Gackt. There’s a lot to learn about him, and the best way to do that is it just dive in and immerse yourself in all that is Gackt. Of course if you just want to ogle his pictures, we’re okay with that too. XD
