Chapter 5; downloads
Clips can go up in size to a few GBs, especially for DVD-rips. The higher
the quality, the larger the size of the file. Sending clips or pictures as
email attachments is simply impossible in some cases. So what should you do
when you are dying to share your treasure of Gackt pictures and clips?? The
following lists some of the file transfer services which you can use to send
files to others.
But please remember to be considerate to others when you are requesting files
from other fans. I know how hard it is to control your burning need to own
every Gackt clip available on the internet, but remember that before you can
download, someone first needs to upload their clips. And uploads take a very
long time, especially for dial-up users. So be polite, and mind your Ps &
Qs whenever you have a favor to ask.
File transfers:
YouSendIt
Yousendit used to be a free file transfer and email service, but they changed
their system a few years ago and registration is now required before you can
download or upload any files. You can still sign up for free if you register
for the Lite account, but there are many limitations to this account, such
as a download bandwidth of 1 GB. The maximum file size that you can send using
yousendit is 100 MB for a Lite account and 2 GB for the rest. One of the main
disadvantages of yousendit is that the downloads have an expiry date (7 days
for Lite account and 14 days for the others).
Megaupload
Megaupload is a free file transfer service. You do not need to register to
download or upload any files, though doing so brings many benefits, such as
a faster transfer rate and less waiting time. However, megaupload does have
download limits and you have to wait for the next day to download your clips
if you have exceeded your limit. Sometimes it might also take a while for
a certain link to work depending on the country you are in, so some files
are not "instantly available". The maximum file size you can send
is 500 MB.
Sendspace
Sendspace is also another free file transfer service and registration is optional.
They have unlimited uploads and allow unlimited downloads per file. However,
the maximum file size is slightly smaller than Megaupload, and you can only
send files up to 300 MB. They have premium accounts as well, which are considerably
cheaper than some of the other file transfer service providers. As a premium
user, you will be able to set the total number of downloads available or set
a download expiry date.
MediaFire
MediaFire is a free and unlimited file and image hosting website and registration
is not required. You can use all the features regardless of whether you have
an account or not and there are no limits to the number of uploads. However,
if you register, you will be able to manage your files and upload them at
any time from any computer. You can also create folders and share entire groups
of files and images with your friends.
Streaming sites:
Youtube
YouTube has plenty of Gackt's clips available for download. Anyone can watch
videos on YouTube and no registration is required to view the clips. You can
easily upload (for this you DO need an account), and share clips online. The
one disadvantage of YouTube is the lack of proper organization of clips. The
clips don't seem to be arranged in any particular order and appears on the
list randomly. Nonetheless, it is a great source of clips, especially for
new fans who are trying to increase their collections of clips. You can also
find some rare files here, as long as you are patient enough to go the entire
collection of Gackt clips. The new clips are also uploaded at an unbelievably
fast rate.
Veoh
Veoh is rather similar to YouTube. The website allows you to upload and share
your files with other people. You can download the files but you need to register
first before you can do so. The website has quite a number of his clips available
for viewing.
Crunchyroll
This website streams Asian films and movies. The site has a comprehensive
collection of animation, games, music, drama and films from Asia. The site
is not limited to Japanese, Korean and Chinese productions, but also includes
countries from various parts of Asia, such as Singapore, Thailand, and Hong
Kong. The site also has the English subs for the Taiga drama, Fuurin Kazan,
in which Gackt appeared as Uesugi Kenshin, as well as for his other music
clips.
Download sites:
Jpopsuki
Jpopsuki is a tracker providing torrent links. Though the name of the site
is Jpopsuki, you can also find files of non-Jpop artists on the site. Usually
you have to wait a few days before the torrents for new clips are available
for download on Jpopsuki. Jpopsuki has a simple layout and rotating banners/pictures
at the top of the page. The site also has a forum and their own IRC channel.
They have a Gackt thread in the forum, though it seems to be fairly new.
Torrents are a little more troublesome than video streaming. For streaming
videos, you can simply click "play" and view the clip right away;
you do not need to download the file. For torrents though, you have to finish
downloading the entire file in order to view the clips. You also need a special
program to download the file using the torrent; some of the programs which
are frequently used are Azureus, Bitcomet, etc. You will then need to download
the torrent link using those programs before you can procced to downloading
the actual clip. The transfer rate also depends on how many seeders (someone
who shares the file) and leechers (someone who is downloading the file) there
are on that particular torrent. If there aren't many seeders or leechers,
a file can take hours, or even days, to download!
Jpopsuki has a penalty system, where you will not be allowed to download
the torrent right away if your upload rate is too low. The maximum wait is
32 hours; but if you have a upload/download ratio above 0.6 and has uploaded
more than 2GB worth of files, you will not be penalized and can download the
link as soon as it's available. This is to ensure that everybody does their
part in sharing the files and to prevent leeching.
d-addicts
You can find torrents for Asian dramas here. You can download the Taiga drama,
Fuurin Kaza, in which Gackt acted as Uesugi Kenshin, on this website. They
have both the raw and subbed versions available for download. Although the
subbed version takes slightly longer to complete, the site uploads the original
version as soon as it's aired in Japan. The site also has a forum and their
own IRC channel. They have a Gackt thread in the forum, though this one also
seems to have been added only recently.
