Chapter 3; sources of information
To remain healthy and sane Dears, all of us need our regular dose of information, forums, and clip downloads. There are a lot of amazing websites on the internet, and here is a brief introduction to some of them. This chapter is mainly divided into three categories: official websites, fansites, and chats and forums. Click on the titles to go to the sites!
Official sites
Gackt.com
This is Gackt's official website. The site was only in Japanese in the past, but recently they have added English, Chinese and Korean versions. However, those versions only have the news, biography, discography and profile sections, and the Japanese version remains the main source of information for fans.
Updates to the TV&RADIO section are sometimes a little slower than other non-official websites, so you might want to check other websites regularly for updates on TV appearances and not just rely on this website. An important feature of the new website are the buttons at the bottom of the home page. Apart from sites affiliated with Gackt.com, they also have buttons for special limited sales of Gackt merchandises, not to mention links to the different official communities.
The Dears ONLY section is limited to members of the fanclub. As a fanclub member, you can read his diary in this section, which he updates once or twice a month, and also his dog’s “diary” called “ 足軽エネルの殿様日記 ” (Soldier Eneru’s Diary). The diary was updated daily until it was stopped in 2007. Though the posts are short, they usually come with pictures of Eneru and sometimes even Gackt himself. You often see Eneru introducing different parts of Gackt’s house and Gackt’s various collections. The Dears Only section also contains short clips and comments from Gackt in the “Media Archive” section. Signing up as a member of Dears entitles you to various fanclub merchandises and you can participate in Dears-only events, such as the ski trip held annually, as well as the overseas fanclub trip (you can read more about these events in our Fanclub Events section). The fanclub used to distribute fanclub magazines once every three months, but this has been changed to a monthly web magazine in 2008.
Currently, only those with a Japanese address can sign up to be a member of the Dears fanclub. So you can sign up for the fanclub as long as you know someone who is staying in Japan and is willing to help you.
If you have a message or would like to write to Gackt, you can do so through the Dears website. Simply click on the "MESSAGE TO Gackt" button at the top of the website and write your address, etc., to send the message. However, please be considerate and remember that Gackt receives tons of emails from his fans every day (he reportedly received 10,000 birthday emails in 2005!!). You can also send him letters and packages through the post.
This is the address for Dears:
〒150-8681 東京都渋谷区渋谷郵便局留 (Tokyo-to Shibuya-ku Shibuya yuubinkyokudome)
GacktオフィシャルファンクラブDears Gackt 宛 (Gackt Official Fanclub Dears) ("Gackt 宛" means "To Gackt".)
Postal code always comes first for Japanese letters. I suggest sticking to Japanese language when you are writing the address instead of writing it in romaji. You can print the address on the letter if you do not know how to write Kanji. But if you are writing in English, please do not forget to write "To Gackt", otherwise the staff will open the letter and read its content.
Gackt official community site
In 2007, Gackt started a new Gackt Official Community Site. Some of the contents, such as news, biography and profile, are similar to Gackt.com, but there are a few contents that can only be found in the community site. The main contents of the site include “Photo”, which shows Gackt attending various events or visiting different locations; “Download”, where you can download official pictures as well as monthly wallpapers; “Birthday mail”, where you receive birthday messages from Gackt; “You Blog”, where GacktJob guitarist, You, puts up photos with different themes; “Personal Blog”, where you will be allowed to post official Gackt pictures on your own blog; and “Ticket” where you can place reservations for concert tickets.
Signing up as a member (Japanese server needed) is optional, and you can still view most of the sections without becoming a member. However, non-members can only view the most recent entries for sections such as “Photo”, “Staff Blog”, and “You Blog”. To view past entries, you will need to sign up as members. Application fee is 1,050 yen per month and there is a free trial period up till February 2008.
Gackt Underland (Gackt★ウンダーランド)
Gackt Underland is a new Gackt mobile site (only accessible through Japanese cell phones) created in 2007. It contains news regarding Gackt, the content of which is similar to the NEWS&TOPICS section in Gackt.com. It is different from the usual mobile site in that you can only download certain things by exchanging it using your G points. (You receive 300G points every month for 315 yen of monthly subscription fee and you can also purchase additional G points separately) Apart from news, short greetings clips and the usual downloadable ring tones and wallpapers, the site also has “Aniki’s back”, which shows pictures of Gackt’s back and is only accessible at certain hours; “Gackt Questionnaire”, which is updated weekly; “(Gackt’s) Love Advice”, where you key in the name and particulars of the person you like and receive love advices.
Nippon Crown
Nippon Crown is the record company that Gackt is signed with. The site updates Gackt's section whenever there are new releases
YOU Official homepage
YOU is the guitarist of GacktJob and he opened his official website in May 2006. The Diary section is particularly fun to read (it's in Japanese though) and tells us more about his personality. This diary is updated daily, so we get to see how he spends his days, and the posts always come with an interesting picture. He also mentions something related to Gackt every now and then. Other than writing about his daily activities, he also posts updates on the projects that he take part in, such as hosting the "street dance contest 全国舞踏大会" in Japan.
You can leave comments in the BBS. I am pretty sure YOU doesn't speak any other language other than Japanese, and perhaps a bit of English, so I don't know if he will understand the comments people leave in their native languages. The amount of comments left every day is astonishing though. ^^;; He holds a photo contest once every month, and the prizes change every time. Sometimes it can be a poster, a photo, or YOU's Darts accessories. These almost always come with his personal autograph as well.
Ju-ken the Bass
Ju-ken also updates his blog frequently, sometimes more than once a day! Though he usually talks about his daily activities, he also mentions his work as a bassist for GacktJob every now and then. He will also update even when he is overseas, for example during the overseas fanclub trip. The blogs definitely provide great insight into the personality of each member of GacktJob.
JUNJI-OFFICIAL WEBSITE
This website lists the past and current activities that Jun-Ji is involved in. You can read his diary in the "Private" section as well.
News & information
Gakuhai Livejournal
Gakuhai is a user on Livejournal and provides updates on Gackt. This journal always manages to stay up-to-date with all his activities and writes comprehensive and detailed information on Gackt and his band members. Plenty of pictures are used on this site, making the contents interesting and easy to understand. This site is an excellent source of information for Gackt fans!
風林火山 Fuurin Kazan
This is the official website for Fuurin Kazan. This site is constantly updated with interviews and pictures of the actors and actresses. They also have a diary (大河三昧) which is rotated between Uchino Masaaki, Ichikawa Kamejirou, Gackt, and the staff. You can read the translations of Gackt’s blog entries in our Translation Section.
Note: This site now features the current Taiga Drama instead of Fuurin Kazan..
Fansites
Sawasdee Gackt
Though this site is no longer updated apart from the Hot News section, it will definitely help you learn more about Gackt, especially if you are a new fan. This site provides invaluable information on his early career, which people who came late to the fandom will not know otherwise. It has plenty of interesting contents, such as the "ET CETERA" and the "My messages to you" sections, and it will take you days to explore this website.
Love potion #9
Love Potion # 9 is an English fansite that has some very interesting and original content, such as an analysis on the story of MOON and a Gackt-dictionary which includes explanations of words that he uses often. A very useful corner for non-Japanese speaking fans! The site also has plenty of concert reports and reviews. The webmistress makes the most creative and beautiful layouts, so it always interesting to go back there and see what new designs she has for the month.
Gackt lyric translation index
This site has one of the most complete collections of Gackt's lyrics translations I've seen on the internet so far. All the lyrics translations for the albums he has released so far can be found here, except for the Love Letter album, where only half of the songs have been translated. The translator also provides explanations on the song and music, as well as some background information for the songs in her translations.
Chats and forums:
SEKI-RAY
SEKI-RAY is a Gackt forum which was started by Taliana. It is currently run by SpiritMuse. The site is affiliated with Pieces, which is a L'Arc~en~Ciel forum. The forum contains interesting discussions on various topics and is easy to navigate despite the amount of contents inside. The moderators do a great job in ensuring that things run smoothly and any problems are swiftly taken care of so that there is no wankery or flaming of any sort in the forum. The people there are very friendly and helpful, especially to newcomers, so you won't feel out of place at all! A definite recommendation to all fans.
Tokyo-nights
Tokyo Nights is a forum dedicated to Japanese music, animation and manga, gaming, and Japanese drama. The Gackt thread can be found under the Official Artists' Forum in the Japanese music section. The thread name is "For Advanced User: The Official Anything Goes Gackt thread!" Despite the name of the title, this thread is not limited to fans who have been around for some time, and new fans are free to join. However, they might find it hard to keep up with this thread since the topics discussed are random and subjects are changed frequently.
